History and work of the Society
History
The Fleet and Church Crookham Society was founded in 1961 as the Fleet and Crookham Amenity Society. The Society’s initial objectives were concerned mainly with the provision, maintenance and enhancement, where possible, of amenities within the two towns. With the change of name these objectives have now broadened to embrace the overall environment in which we live and the quality of life of all residents.
The work of the Society
As well as being concerned with the provision of amenities, the Society is now very much involved with planning matters, the revitalisation of the town centre, the provision of services, such as education, public transport, health care and extensive monitoring of the activities of Hart District Council and, to a lesser extent, of Hampshire County Council. These latter tasks are very necessary, since the effective operation of local government is vital to almost every aspect of life in the two towns.
The Society is affiliated to the Civic Voice and to the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). These are very important national bodies, with considerable status, from whom we obtain much valuable guidance, advice and assistance.
People often feel that, in this bureaucratic age, there is little that can be done to influence local affairs. Past experience has shown this need not be so. A wide range of contacts with local councillors and like-minded organisations can have an influence on the development of our environment.
Members of the Society attend Hart District Council committee meetings, monitor planning and leisure proposals and comment or discuss our concerns with our elected councillors. This is of particular importance when Fleet and Crookham do not have a town or parish council. Hart D. C. have taken on the function of a town council for the area but Fleet and Church Crookham councillors are a minority on District Council committees.
The Society also takes an active interest in regional planning, local planning inquiries and appeals, development of recreational and sporting facilities, car parking and traffic problems and road safety. Public meetings are attended where important local issues are discussed. We liaise with other, like-minded organisations in matters of mutual concern.
As a member of this Society you can ensure that your voice is heard in the preparation of proposals affecting your local environment - and that of your neighbours.
